The primary objective with all the children is to raise their awareness of personal safety issues and improve their physical and self confidence. We teach them to be alert and observant in order to avoid dangerous and undesirable situations and people, as well as practical self defence in case they are attacked.
Students are taught in a safe and fun environment where their group participation and social skills are constantly being developed. At Eastway Jiu-jitsu we split our training into four age groups which train separately. · Juniors “The Little Ones” (6-8 yrs) · Juniors (8-11 yrs) · Seniors (12-16 yrs) · Adults (16-60 yrs) There is a very different training focus with each group depending on age, ability, strength and understanding. Girls and boys are taught and train together, but the children usually pair up and train with friends of a similar age, sex, ability and physical size. The format and number of students in each group changes throughout the school year. Currently over half the students are girls. This reflects our focus with the children on personal safety and practical self defence, with low impact, safe training designed to build physical and self confidence... Our groups are flexible and overlap. We have students up to 17/18 who continue training in the seniors group with their friends, and we have some of the stronger 15/16/17 year olds who train with the adults. The adult classes are split into mixed martial arts and more traditional Jiu-jitsu classes. The children usually train once a week, for one hour, after school, during term time. Eastway Jiu-jitsu is open to everyone from all walks of life, regardless of gender, colour or creed. Some of our students have disabilities. We invite you to come along and watch our classes so you can see the full range of what we offer...just wear a tracksuit or loose clothes and join in! Sensei Michelle Say is the full time instructor for Eastway Jiu-jitsu Woodford club Children’s classes and she has over 20 years experience in Jiu-jitsu and martial arts. Jiu-jitsu training is fun and it works!
Training in martial arts helps young people to control and channel their natural aggression in a positive and constructive way, and gives them immense self confidence and self respect, and improves their self esteem.
